Mabel Chong
Mabel Chong grew up one of six siblings in rural southern China, in a village of fewer than 500 people. Her mother owned a single pair of golden hoop earrings — which she sold to fund the family’s move to Hong Kong. By the time Mabel was thirteen, jewelry had already changed the course of her life.
She carried that feeling to San Francisco, where she learned to metalsmith, discovered the world of gem shows, and in 2004 launched her own line from a home studio. Her tagline — Uncivilized Elegance — captures the aesthetic precisely: earthy and intricate, colorful and sophisticated, designed outside of convention because Mabel grew up outside of it.
